Peanut the squirrel was a pet Eastern grey squirrel that had an Instagram account devoted to it with 534,000 followers. In October 2024, Peanut was taken, along with a pet raccoon named Fred, from its owners home in Pine City, New York by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. It was later euthanized to test for rabies. The owner, Mark Longo, said that they were in the process of filing paperwork to have the squirrel certified as an educational animal when Peanut was seized. Peanut had lived under its owner's care for seven years, after its mother was struck by a car. The owner and his wife have run an animal sanctuary since 2023, which houses horses, goats, and alpacas. Peanut's death gained notoriety with Donald Trump, Elon Musk and others publicly commenting on it. Read more
